But how do you identify worsted wool fabrics?

What are the factors that determine the quality of wool fabrics?

The fineness and length of fabric fibers are the most important factors affecting the quality of wool. Garments made from the slender wool fibers use less blended fibers than lower-quality wool garments and retain their shape better, getting better with each wash.

Short wool fibers do provide softness and a high grammage, but also make wool-increased garments more prone to pilling. Whether it is 100% wool fabric or wool fabric blended with other fibers will affect its feel and its price.

Blending is combining wool fabrics with wool, silk or synthetic fibers. These cheap fibers lower their prices. All that buying a blend also means you're compromising on price.

Here are five tests you can use to determine the quality of wool fabrics.

1.Touch test

High-quality wool fabric is soft but not too soft to the touch, it softens over time.

2.Appearance test

Lay the wool suit in a horizontal position and view the entire surface. If you see a very small amount of runny (approximately 1mm to 2mm), then the wool is of high quality.

3.Tensile test

Gently pull apart a piece of wool suiting fabric to see if it bounces back. High-quality wool suits will spring back, while poor-quality wool will not. Plus, the high-quality fabric stretches and turns it over. The tighter the knit, the better it will hold its shape and be less prone to holes.

4.Pilling test

Rub your hands on the woolen fabric a few times. If particles start to form, it means that the wool fabric used contains too much short wool or other compound fibers, which means low quality.

5.Light test

Hold the item up to the light and look for uneven or thin spots. A high-quality wool suit should always be woven from high-quality yarn, with no trace of unevenness under the fibers.

Why are worsted wool fabrics so expensive?

There is no doubt that worsted wool fabric is one of the most expensive materials in fashion manufacturing. But why is it so expensive? Well, it depends on two main issues. The complexity of the manufacturing process and the scarcity of raw materials. Surprisingly, a goat only provides about 200 grams of good wool, which is not even enough to devalue a sweater. Considering that it takes a year and about 2-3 goat furs to make a wool suit, it's no wonder the price has skyrocketed. At the same time, the amount of wool in the world is also very limited.
